Candidate for Ulster County Legislator, District 8 (Esopus)
A community advocate known throughout the county, Laura Petit has resided in the Town of Esopus for 35 years. Laura’s vision for Esopus is to build the community by focusing on resident’s needs and issues: Job security, infrastructure issues, rail and trail, improving recreation, addressing consumer protection, energy efficiency, animal protection and sustainable lifestyles – are some of the concerns that she will address in the legislature.
A former two-term Ulster County Legislator, Laura is well qualified to represent our community. She has written and secured millions in grant funding and has already identified new grant opportunities for Esopus. Laura is the author of the nationally recognized New Paltz Zero Waste Action Plan and initiated several new town events, including a repair café. She was previously appointed to the Ulster County Climate Smart and Recycling Oversight Committees. Among her other achievements is the Ulster County Volunteer Incentive Program for all emergency responders.
Having raised five children while working full time, Laura received her paralegal certification from Marist College in Poughkeepsie. She served three terms on the Esopus Library Board as President and Vice-President. Laura was a daisy and cub scout leader, active in the PTO, participated in neighborhood cleanups and secretary to the Waterfront Advisory, Zoning, and Environmental Boards.
